Marco Rubio to Visit Mumbai and Jamnagar in October, Skipping New Delhi
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio will visit Mumbai and Jamnagar in October, skipping New Delhi. His second India trip this year comes amid efforts to strengthen energy ties, economic cooperation and advanced technology partnerships.
According to the US State Department, Rubio will meet senior government officials during his India visit. Discussions will focus on strengthening bilateral strategic ties and exchanging views on regional and global developments.
Rubio's upcoming visit will be his second official trip to India this year, following his four-day visit in May.
Energy Cooperation to Feature in India-US Talks
Expanding cooperation in the energy sector will be among the key subjects discussed during Rubio's visit. The US Secretary of State will also meet business leaders to explore opportunities for commercial investment and greater economic cooperation between India and the United States.
Before arriving in India, Rubio will travel to Uzbekistan to participate in the C5+1 ministerial meeting. During his stay, he will also hold bilateral discussions with senior officials from five Central Asian countries: Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and the Kyrgyz Republic.
The engagements are expected to provide an opportunity to discuss regional developments alongside bilateral priorities before Rubio continues his diplomatic tour to India.
Rubio Spent Four Days in India in May
Rubio undertook a four-day visit to India in May this year, travelling to Kolkata, Agra, Jaipur and New Delhi. His previous trip focused on strengthening strategic relations between India and the United States, expanding cooperation under the Quad alliance and advancing discussions on trade, defence and energy security.
Before Rubio's next India visit, a delegation of senior officials from the US National Security Council may also travel to the country. The proposed visit is aimed at preparing to give fresh momentum to the advanced technology partnership between the two countries.
According to people familiar with the matter, the US delegation and their Indian counterparts will focus on the TRUST initiative, launched in February 2025. The initiative aims to expand cooperation between India and the United States in semiconductors, artificial intelligence (AI), space, biotechnology and other critical technology sectors.
The proposed engagement would bring advanced technology cooperation into focus alongside the broader strategic and economic agenda of Rubio's visit.
Visit Follows Controversy Over US Governor's Trip to India
Rubio's second official visit to India comes days after Montana Governor Greg Gianforte travelled to the country and faced online criticism and abuse during his visit. The episode unfolded against the broader backdrop of growing negative sentiment towards Indians in the United States.
Gianforte, however, played down the criticism. Speaking to the Hindustan Times, he said the visit had delivered significant progress despite the opposition and criticism he encountered.
He said the objective was to advance Montana's interests in a way that benefited India, Montana and the United States. According to Gianforte, working with both sides helps promote important research, create jobs in Montana and support food and protein supplies to India.
Gianforte also said that, in the current environment, almost any undertaking attracts some degree of opposition.
Against this backdrop, Rubio's upcoming visit is expected to provide another opportunity for India and the United States to advance their strategic partnership, strengthen energy and economic cooperation, and explore collaboration in critical technology sectors.
